Statement:

Painting nature is my gravity. In a world that is constantly industrializing; I want to signify the importance of our organic world. I admire the process of capturing a photo that amplifies a specific area of focus and has the surrounding elements out of focus. I understand how a film camera would find this focus, and it has become the framework of my painting technique. My work includes painting hyper realistic detail where I want the viewers immediate attention to be and have the surrounding detail to be impressionistic style painting. I base the strength of my contrasts, tones, and shades on the range of sight that is in the reference photograph. In the way I am creating these paintings; I am guiding the viewer through the process of how I look at each photograph. What captures your attention first and the soft complimentary elements that surround the sharpest focus of detail.

The inspiration behind the subject matter of my paintings comes from my beloved grandparents, Alfred and Harlene Little. I descend from a family of strong farmers that majorly contributed to the fundamental establishment of Carling Township, Ontario. This inspires me to capture and preserve the land that they have cultivated over multiple generations. Many of my paintings are of property that is owned and or co-owned by said family; such as Davellen Little Heritage property. Located on a local lake; this decommissioned Sawmill has now been retrofitted to a private place of gathering for the descendances of Alfred Little’s father and mother; David and Hellen Little. Another property is a private hunting and fishing camp located near Point au Baril, Ontario. I had 14 years of memories at this camp with my grandfather, Alfred Little, and mother, Karen McCarthy. Painting my family’s land is my way of commemorating their hard work and devotion to building the community of Carling Township, Ontario.

Another location that I have painted multiple times is London, Ontario and the surrounding areas. This geographic location is also very sentimental to me; as Giovanni Ranalli and I, lived very close to his parents, Mario and Joanne Ranalli. During this time; I developed a strong companionship with my in-laws. We would spend our spare time together exploring local areas. Both Mario and Joanne participated in my ability to find adapt and persevere with recent changes. Painting this location is my way of commemorating the strength and courage they both instilled within me.
